Matt
Paxton has spent over 8 years helping hoarders clean out their homes as the
host for the reality TV show “Hoarders” and as the head of his own hoarding
cleaning company. Recently, Paxton
teamed up with ServiceMaster Restore to help them create a nationwide cleaning
program dedicated to helping hoarders.
When it comes to hoarder
cleaning, it is more about the approach as Paxton
says, “Most people think it’s about cleaning, but it’s really not; it’s about
communication, understanding, and trust.”

Matt Paxton
The new nationwide hoarding
cleaning program created by ServiceMaster with the assistance of Matt Paxton
allows ServiceMaster Restore to respond to major hoarding cleanup projects
throughout the U.S. Each hoarding specialist
trains with Paxton for three 10 hour days at the corporate headquarters in
Memphis, TN. The training emphasizes the
importance of understanding the hoarder and gaining his or her trust before
entering the home. Paxton refers to the
process of gaining a hoarder’s trust as “equalization” which could take several
weeks to accomplish:
“We treat them as equals.
We hang out with them, get to know them.
So much of their world is filled with judgment and hate and
misunderstanding. We don’t go in until
they know that we understand them and that we’re not going to judge them. It’s so much about being patient.”
