The Psychrometric Chart.

To properly evaluate temperature, relative humidity and grains per pound (or g/kg), restorers must use a psychrometric chart. Typically, a restorative drying technician will acquire a dry bulb temperature (either in Fahrenheit or Celsius) and a relative humidity using a thermohygrometer. These two readings establish the capacity of the air mass (temperature) to hold moisture and the relative amount of moisture in the air (relative humidity).

After acquiring these two readings, the technician can then employ the psychrometric chart to calculate GPP  (Grains per pound).  Other calculations are also made if necessary. Once these calculation are completed the technician compares them to surrounding conditions or previous conditions to evaluate drying potential.

When performing in-place drying, more airmovers are needed for fast evaporation.

• In a class 2 or class 3 water loss, air movers are placed every 10'-16'  along the wall.  ( if you use metric  3-4 m) along the wall.
• Air movers are directed toward the wall at a 15° to 45° angle, depending upon the type of air mover.
• The air mover snout will almost touch the wall, which means within 1"  (again,  if you are metric- 2.5 cm ) of the wall but not rubbing it.

All air movers ins each area will face the same direction, whether clockwise or counter-clockwise, to ensure that air movers are not pushing against each other .

Desiccant Dehumidifiers.

Desiccant dehumidifiers utilize chemical attraction instead of condensation to remove water from the air. Because they are not limited by low dew point temperatures and when used properly they produce the lowest vapor pressure of any dehumidifier.

Desiccant dehumidifiers have many applications in restorative drying, but they are most commonly used to dry dense materials such as hardwood floor.

Desiccants do not collect water in a pan for automatic pump-out instead , they produce damp reactivation air, which must be vented outside the structure using temporary ducting. In some situations this venting results in a pressure differential in the drying area.

Their involvement has helped children all over the state have a Christmas that otherwise would not be possible from the contributions of private businesses and individuals. PJ's is a non-profit organization dedicated to bring joy, comfort and dignity to those who suffer from the effects of Mental Illness. PJ's started in 1986 when it was discovered that the number of attempted suicides among the mentally ill because they could not provide Christmas for their children. Along with her many responsibilities here at ServiceMaster of Salt Lake, every year Kathy takes on the task of organizing, purchasing and accepting donations, distributing presents to children throughout the valley. Cracked toilet tanks lead  to flooding.  The tank won't fill up because  the shut off  valve will never close without  the tank filling up properly.

A lot of water loss can occur in a very short time.

Hardwood floor Drying #2

Once it has been determined that the floor can be salvaged by in-place drying, the first step is to determine a dry goal for the hardwood and subfloor. Directing warm dry air under and between the boards, is the most effective eay to dry the hardwood. The wood is considered dry when:  

• Hardwood and sub-sufaces are within 2-4 percentage points of normal EMC. ( Equilibrium moisture content)
• Sub-sufaces below harwood are dried to within 2-4 percentage points of the harwood.

After the wood flooring has been dried to an acceptable moisture level, It is important to remind people to allow sufficient acclimation time before the floor is reinished.

Water extraction.

All extraction tools rely upon the principle of airflow through the affected carpet and underlay in order to remove water. for example: High negative pressures are created by the vacuum equipment, whether portable or truck mounted. Hoses usually 2" in diameter are then used to connect the vacuum equipment to an extraction tool. Airflow through the tool and hose removes water from the material and carries it to the water tank.

Reporting Water Damage..things to note

When reporting a water disaster  a few things to keep in mind that you should report.

1. Origination  (what is the source of water)

2. Water Cleanliness  (water from a dishwasher or ice maker line, over flow from a toilet )

3. The extent of Water Damage  ( how far has it migrated, has it wicked up the walls )

4. Have you done anything to clean up (mitigate) before calling.  What?

Always remember the first concern (after stopping the water at source-if possible) should always be  your health and safety.
