Back to Work Tuseday.

Back to work Tuesday for everyone, nice Christmas weekend. Family time, watching the excitement of young children opening a present..saying cooolll, tossing it aside and asking "whats next?"   Santa brought one gift, Mom & Dad gave a couple, and the kids are happy. No need to receive alot of stuff, so when the uncle gives them a two pound bag of Belly Flops and an Angry Bird thing they like it, just don't ask to take a picture.

Psychrometric Chart

The Psychrometric Chart.

To properly evaluate temperature, relative humidity and grains per pound (or g/kg), restorers must use a psychrometric chart. Typically, a restorative drying technician will acquire a dry bulb temperature (either in Fahrenheit or Celsius) and a relative humidity using a thermohygrometer. These two readings establish the capacity of the air mass (temperature) to hold moisture and the relative amount of moisture in the air (relative humidity).

After acquiring these two readings, the technician can then employ the psychrometric chart to calculate GPP  (Grains per pound).  Other calculations are also made if necessary. Once these calculation are completed the technician compares them to surrounding conditions or previous conditions to evaluate drying potential.

Permeance

A measure of the ability for vapor to travel through a material. Permeance is measured in granins of water vapor, per hour, per square foot of material with a difference of 1.0" Hg of vapor pressure on opposing sides.

Peaking and Buckling Hardwood floors

Damage is most likely on hardwood floor when the moisture in the bottom of the board begins to migrate to the top of the wood, causing the board to expand on top.  This results in excessive horizontal pressure and buckling. In most cases, the damage caused by the buckling cannot be repaired, and the floor will have to be removed and replaced.

Buckling  or Peaking hardwood floor
(RSA)

Harwood floor drying #2

Once it has been determined that the floor can be salvaged by in-place drying, the first step is to determine a dry goal for the hardwood and subfloor. Directing warm dry air under and between the boards, is the most effective eay to dry the hardwood. The wood is considered dry when:

  • Hardwood and sub-sufaces are within 2-4 percentage points of mormal EMC.
  • Sub-sufaces below harwood are dried to within 2-4 percentage points of the harwood.
After the wppd flooring has been dried to an acceptable moisture level, It is important to remind people to allow sufficient acclimation time before the floor is reinished.

(RSA)

Cupping & Crowning Hardwood Floors 1

Cupping and Crowning of hardwood flooring result from moisture content differences between the top and bottom of the board. Cupping will generally be the first indication of abnormal moisture levels as the bottom of the board absorbs moisture. The bottom of the board will then expand, bending the edges of the board upward and creating a cupped appearance.  Cupping is not permanent damage and should be dried in most cases.

DEW Point

Temperature at which air can hold no more moisture. The further a surface is below dew point temperature, the more condensation will occur.

Dew point is the temperature at which air becomes saturated with moisture vapor, and can hold no more water vapor. When air is cooled, its capacity for water vapor is reduced. Eventually, if temperature is cooled enough, the relative humidity will reach 100%, or saturation. When this occurs, the air has reached its dew point temperature.

Vapor Pressure

What is Vapor Pressure?

Pressure of water on surrounding surfaces and objects, measured in inches of mercury. Directly related to GPP and Dew point.   Vapor pressure is the force that drives higher concentrations of humidity from one space to another- vapor pressure always seeks equilibrium.

Wednesday Morning... Inversion starting...

What to report today... So they reported on the new this morning that an inversion was starting so it's going to stay cold. From where I sit, looking out the windows to the north, the skies are blue with a tint of brown on the horizon. We can still see the Sun. Wispy clouds or contrails. I guess a storm must be moving our way.

Black Friday.

It's Black Friday, supposedly the day of the year when merchants finally go into the black because of high volume sales that start the holidays shopping.

Good deals on everything? I'm skeptical. In the race to beat out other stores it started from opening at 5 AM to 12AM  and now stores open early on Thanksgiving day or start their best discounts days or weeks before.

ServiceMaster of Salt Lake always gives you a value quality deal on our services-all year long.
